US bans Chinese AI startup DeepSeek from civilian government systems

The U.S. government barred civilian federal agencies from using DeepSeek products and services, citing national security risks. The Department of Homeland Security said DeepSeek models present multiple threat vectors and could transfer sensitive data to the PRC. The ban was announced a few days after DeepSeek released its latest AI model.
Why it matters: Government IT teams must replace or avoid DeepSeek tools to comply with the new restriction.
